OEM Timing Belts & Chains

In your car’s engine, the movement of the crankshaft and the camshaft need to be in sync. This is what the engine’s timing belt or timing chain is for. These moving parts of the engine need to have synchronized motion in order for the engine valves to open and close at correct intervals. Depending on your car’s model and make, it either comes with a timing belt or timing chain installed. Timing belts are inexpensive and easier to replace but wear out faster. In contrast, timing chains are more durable. In some cases, timing chains don’t need replacing as long as you have your oil changed regularly.

Which Cars Have Timing Chains Instead of Belts?

Cars known to use timing chains include most vehicles from BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Cadillac, Saab, Perodua, and Nissan. Most Honda vehicles, and Ford vehicles from the 1990s to early 2000s use a timing belt.

Do Timing Chains Need to Be Replaced Like Timing Belts?

As mentioned, timing chains last significantly longer than timing belts. A benchmark to replace the timing chain is around 80,000 to 100,000 miles. Most modern engines don’t require timing chain replacement until 300,000 miles. In contrast, timing belts can last anywhere between 40,000 and 100,000 miles. However, some factors such as extreme temperatures can cause the belt to wear out faster.
